Painting

My paintings are comic-based. Their source material is periodicals of the early seventies, essentially of English and French origin. The works are constructed firstly as collage, then transferred to canvas. The enlarged canvases are facsimiles of the torn comics, thus acquiring artwork status with their spontaneous, yet structured composition and hard, black-edged intense colour. They relate principally to surface appearance, but also explore spontaneous narratives brought about through the fragmentation of torn image and text.

Torn comics have their own dynamic content, making any further intervention superfluous. For me, the creative moment is quick yet structured, and finally unpredictable. It is the act of tearing and reorganising comic fragments, the process of enlargement through transformation to paint.
